Can you believe that next week is the middle of July?! As summer rushes past us I hope you are getting out enjoying the sunshine, making the most of long evenings by entertaining friends and family, and of course enjoying the abundance of summer produce available at local markets.
Last week I definitely made the most of summer with a quick trip home to Cape Breton Island and successfully met my goal of eating lobster everyday I was there. Lobster dinner, lobster rolls, even lobster stuffed mushrooms caps, I ate it all mercury poisoning be damned! The trip home was to celebrate a birthday and I learned a key baking lesson: buttercream icing and humidity do not get along. After two attempts at milk chocolate buttercream icing split, I admitted defeat and reverted back to traditional butter icing. So before we jump into this week’s Friday favorites I give my summer baking tip: if you are making buttercream icing check the humidity index before you start!
It’s summertime which means cookouts, backyard fires, longer nights, and visits with family and friends. I’m always on the look out for easy appetizers that can be prepared outside and if hot on the grill. When it comes to summertime entertaining the easier the better! My favorite this week is fire and whisky baked cheese. This rich, oooey gooey treat will leave your guests begging for more. Really delicious cheese, fresh rosemary and garlic, all topped off with a splash of whisky – what is not to love?!

I love this article from A Couple Cooks outlining how to give your pantry a healthy makeover. Cutting down on processed foods in our cupboards and fridges is something we should all consider doing. That’s right this healthy couple is advocating to toss anything with five ingredients or more. It’s tough and is something I definitely strive to do, but the odd processed items do sneak in. This post is a great reminder of the benefits of keeping a processed free pantry and some helpful tips on how to make this happen.
This favorite is purely all about day dreaming… 9 dreamy backyard pizza ovens. I want them all! Gorgeous collection of al fresco dining that will leave you seriously envious. While they are all dreamy let me know what is your favorite outdoor oven?
Maybe because I was home last week, or maybe because it is summer, but my favorite sip this week is Benjamin Bridge Nova 7. This charming wine is so fragrant and coy, you’ll swear it is flirting with you. The wine has just a slight effervescent making it refreshing and reviving to your palate. I love it as an afternoon sip or an after dinner drink. With a low alcohol content and a long finish, you can not go wrong with this wine in the summer or year round with sushi and asian dishes.
It’s been hot here, seriously unending hot. And in an old home, without air conditioning, it can be a little unpleasant for us and for the short noised fur children. To keep them comfortable we got them The Green Pet Shop Cooling Mat. This seriously amazing mat doesn’t need water or electricity, just the pressure from the dog and it is a pleasant cooling temperature for hours. The mat is probably the Fur Favorite of the Summer! Highly, highly recommend to keep your fur children happy and cool this summer.
