I’m 4 weeks in to my commitment to bake one batch of dog treats a week. And so far good! The pups are loving the homemade treats and the unanticipated benefit of this experiment is that it’s actually teaching me a lot about baking gluten free.
The past few weeks I’ve been working with oats and almond flour as my gluten free alternative to wheat flours. Almonds are notoriously healthy nuts providing a good dose of manganese and vitamin E , as well as a healthy serving of monounsaturated fats that is just as good for our furry friends as it is for us. Not only do almonds have a healthy boost of protein, they are also very low in carbohydrates and gluten free, which fits with a healthy diet for dogs.
The almond flour has a higher moisture content than wheat flour – and should actually be stored in the fridge #learning. This means you don’t need to add much liquid into a recipe. It also means that once baked the treats are chewy and soft, which is ideal for my small, senior dog.
How cute are these Blueberry Drops?! The Lovely Husband thought they were a treat for him when he first saw them. The treats were a serious hit with the pups, out of the three recipes I’ve created these were paws down the favorite. Paws haha Sorry I couldn’t resist!
- ½ cup blueberries
- ½ cup oat flour
- 1.5 cup almond flour
- 1 medium egg
- 3 tbsp plain yogurt
- 3 tbsp natural peanut butter
- Preheat oven 350F
- Whisk together egg, yogurt and peanut butter in a mixing bowl.
- Add both flours ½ cup at a time to the yogurt mixture until well blended.
- Fold in blueberries.
- Roll 1 tbsp of dough and place balls on a parchment lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes at 350F.
The latest recipe for the week are Strawberry Banana Treats. I was aiming for mini muffins, and these turned out a little more like chunky mini muffins. But you want to know the best part about cooking/baking for your dogs?? They don’t care what it looks like! It’s all about the taste.
My two fur babies LOVE strawberries. In fact these treats got created because in the midst of taking in grocery bags Coco dug out the container of strawberries and started to eat them while I was outside. She’s a ninja when it comes to getting food out of a bag! Their love of strawberries are good with me, because much like blueberries they are a nutritional superfood for your dog. Strawberries and blueberries are full of antioxidants, high in fiber and pack a serious vitamin C punch. And bonus if your dog hates having their teeth cleaned like mine, strawberries even contain an enzyme that can help clean and whiten your dog’s teeth. Smile!
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 cup diced strawberries
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup large oats
- ½ cup oat flour
- 2 cups almond flour
- ¼ cup water
- Preheat oven to 350F
- Puree diced strawberries and banana in food processor or blender.
- In a large bowl mix flours, oats, and egg together, fold in pureed fruit and water.
- In a greased mini muffin pan, place 1 tbsp of batter into each cup.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes at 350F.
- Cool and store in air-tight container.
A BIG thanks to all of you who have been following along as I post these recipes on my Facebook page and Instagram each Sunday!! I hope you are enjoying the treats for your furry friends and are feeling inspired to get into the kitchen! Next week I will be taking a savory turn working with brown rice flour, parsnips and parsley.
