Blueberry and Blackberry Grunt

Traditional Nova Scotia Blueberry Grunt. Recipe adapted from Select Nova Scotia.
  • Berries
  • 2 cups blueberries
  • 2 cups blackberries
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • zest ½ lemon
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • Biscuits
  • 2 cups flour
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup 1% milk
  1. In a skillet, mix the berries, sugar, and water. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer until the berries thicken and are jam like. Remove from heat, add the cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice and zest.
  2. Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Cut in the butter then add the milk and combine until just mixed- it will be lumpy.
  3. Roll flour mixture into balls and place them into the skillet on top of the berry mixture.
  4. Place the skillet on medium heat, cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Do not lift the lid!!
  5. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
