Hi All! The end of another week, thankfully. The weather has finally turned here and the leaves are beginning to peak out on the ends of the branches in the back yard. I love looking out each morning and seeing the progress. It’s always an exciting, refreshing time of year! A few local outdoor markets have opened up already, food trucks are making their way back to street corners, the days are longer and the nights warmer, and the aromas of neighbours’ BBQing are once again wafting through the evening air. Perhaps it’s because our winters are long and harsh, that makes the beginning of spring and warmer weather seem so magical, regardless of why I love it, possibly my favorite time of year.
This week I watched the movie Chef again and since I’ve been craving a Cuban sandwich. Strongly considering slow roasting a pork shoulder to make a sandwich this weekend. But I also recently picked up mulato chiles so I may make a mole sauce. Perhaps I could combine the two… This is my first time cooking with mulato chiles any tips would be greatly appreciated!
I have to say I’m really liking my favorites this week! It’s an eclectic collection of awesomeness that I hope will make your weekend tastier, prettier.
Avocado fries. Must be healthy right?! Well no probably not, especially with the cheese dip they are served with, but the recipe for crispy avocado fries with melty cheesy dip from Joy the Baker was hands down my favorite recipe of the week. I think it’s a fun twist on fries and dip, or more traditional veggie munchies like zucchini sticks. With the start of Stanley Cup Playoffs these avocado fries would be a great game watching snack!

It was Earth Day this past week, which hopefully gave us all a chance to pause and think about how we reuse and could reduce in our homes and our kitchens. Food waste is a major issue, both environmentally and economically so I love this post from Bon Appetit on how to reduce kitchen waste. Carrot tops, olive pits, herb stems this article covers a wide range of common kitchen waste providing innovative ways to reuse these often discarded items. Saving the planet and you money at the same time. Bookmark this page and visit frequently.

Social media is now littered with photos of food. Restaurants are full of people snapping photos of their dinner and brunches. When did that happen?! And why do we care?! What is it about searching and viewing photos of other people’s food that is appealing to us? Well according to this article in The Atlantic, photos of food appeal to us on a primal level, fuelling our wants and desires. It is an interesting read, that made me think about why I take photos and why I search out others. So have a read and a think. Let me know your thoughts. And lastly to those of you who search out my photos thank you!

My favorite sip this week has been a Portuguese gem the 2010 Maritavora Colheita Douro. It is a great wine with big ripe flavors, a little chewy but well layered. The wine is uniquely made with half of the grapes were fermented and foot-trodden in traditional stone lagares, while the remaining grapes were de-stemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. This small estate vineyard is certified organic.
My little hipster dogs are absolutely loving Green Bark Gummies Health and Vitality treats. These gummy bears for pups are duck treats with Omega-3 rich chia and kelp and alfalfa to help support fresh breath. Yes, I’m feeding the dogs chia now, but my little monsters absolutely love them! Next to their favorite peanut butter treats they picked the gummies! High praise indeed.
